Numbering Plan Update 2026-03-05 - MWC Update
MWC Update
This week we were in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress — spending time in the GSMA Ministerial Programme, the policymaker forum that brings together regulators and nation-state level delegates alongside industry leaders. The conversations there were around up-skilling citizens in the age of AI, but many delegates mentioned their countries may have a large number of people not yet connected - let alone ready to adopt AI. There's a real push to connect more rural communities who have not yet adopted digital connectivity - we'll keep an eye out for future numbering plan expansions for these countries.
We had a useful discussion with PXS.com about their Number Management System — effectively a “one-stop-shop” for numbering actions, with clear benefits for both regulators (oversight/workflows/reporting) and operators (visibility of assigned ranges and structured requests for new resources). As numbering complexity rises (new services, new providers, new use-cases), tooling like this really is core national infrastructure.
Fraud prevention came up repeatedly too. We spoke with smartnumbers.com about their work tackling phone fraud — and the value of faster intelligence sharing and earlier intervention when confirmed fraud patterns emerge. In practice, this is exactly the direction the industry needs: faster sharing, faster blocking, fewer victims.
We also caught up with cloudnumbering on the growing adoption of virtual numbers — and how real-time procurement/management plus API access is changing how newer services are built and scaled. As virtual numbering becomes more mainstream, it reinforces an e164.com drumbeat we’ve had for years: accurate, up-to-date numbering data is a foundation for consumer protection, enforcement, and fraud mitigation.
